The Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) and the Adoptee Film Festival co-present the Also-Known-As 30th Anniversary screening event and opening reception. This special program includes Tasting Heritage by Emily Strong (Korean adoptee), What Remains by Elizabeth Berkman (Indigenous Bolivian adoptee), CHOPSTICK by Leah Xiuzhen Ratha (Chinese adoptee), and Stranger’s Reunion by Elizabeth Sargent (Korean adoptee).

Tasting Heritage

  • Director: Emily Strong (Korean adoptee)

  • Synopsis: "Tasting Heritage" is a coming of culture story about a Korean-American woman's savory journey to reclaim her heritage through food


What Remains

  • Director: Dariun Robinson (Indigenous Bolivian adoptee)

  • Running Time: 10 min 31 sec

  • Synopsis: As Mark waits for a phone call from his daughter, he begins to suspect that his in-home care nurse is keeping something from him. While they both struggle with his cognitive decline, they must discover what family looks like in the face of Alzheimer's.


CHOPSTICK

  • Director: Leah Xiuzhen Ratha (Chinese adoptee)

  • Running Time: 3 min 10 sec

  • Synopsis: A chopstick, adopted from one country and raised in one filled with forks, goes on a journey of self discovery and identity.


Stranger’s Reunion

  • Director: Elizabeth Sargent (Korean adoptee)

  • Running Time: 13 min 28 sec

  • Synopsis: Mira, a Korean-American adoptee, travels to Hong Kong to meet her birth mother for the first time, navigating language barriers and misunderstandings in search of emotional connection and belonging.


◆ About Also-Known-As

Also-Known-As is a New York-based nonprofit organization that has been a community empowering internationally and transracially adopted people through mentorship, education, advocacy, and storytelling. With over 200 members representing 23 countries, it has grown into a global network that amplifies adoptee voices and honors the complexity of adoption and diverse identity. As one of a series of celebrations for 30 years of Also-Known-As, the film screening event will be held to highlight the films of adoptee movie directors.
