Goddess Era (여신시대)

Korea on Screen is a year-long screening series celebrating the depth and diversity of Korean cinema. In March, we kick off the program with two extraordinary documentaries that explore the spiritual and cultural roots of Korea—from the "living goddesses" of the Jeju sea to the meditative philosophy of temple food.

The Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) and the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) New York co-present 2026 Korea on Screen: KOCCA Spotlight. This special program highlights the creativity and storytelling of Korean content through two distinctive titles: Goddess Era (여신시대) and The Philosopher’s Kitchen (철학자의 요리).

For any inquiries, please contact the Korean Cultural Center New York at film@koreanculture.org.

(철학자의 요리)

◆ Program

Goddess Era (여신시대)
Thursday, March 19th, 7:30PM

Director: Moon Seung-wook, Yoo Ye-jin

This film is a journey to rediscover "Goddess Culture"—a tradition long suppressed and concealed within patriarchal society. Centering on the Jeju Haenyeo (women divers) as the living embodiment of these ancient myths, the documentary portrays them not just as laborers, but as guardians of nature who carry the spirit of traditional goddesses. By highlighting their life of communication and coexistence rather than competition and growth, the film offers a profound reflection on our society's relationship with nature.

The Philosopher’s Kitchen (철학자의 요리)
Friday, March 20, 7:30PM

Director: Baek Heon-seok, Jeong Ui-tae, Ko Yun-seong,

Buddhist nun and chef Jeong Kwan is a devoted Buddhist practitioner and a world-renowned ambassador of Korean cuisine. The Philosopher’s Kitchen follows her daily life through the four seasons, capturing the rhythm and intimacy of her practice. The film reveals her radical culinary philosophy—one that breaks from convention—while embracing her unmistakably human presence as someone who laughs and cries within the monastery walls.
