The Korean Cultural Center New York proudly presents House of Hummingbird as part of its Korea on Screen series—a year-long screening series celebrating the depth and diversity of Korean cinema. Through feature films, documentaries, short films, and independent productions, the series aims to broaden access to and appreciation of Korean cinema in New York City.
A personal coming-of-age drama set in 1990s Seoul, House of Hummingbird follows 14-year-old Eun-hee as she escapes from family neglect and violence, exploring her first love and roaming the neighborhood on the brink of enormous social change. Drawing on director Bora Kim’s own memories of growing up in Seoul, the film weaves together the textures of adolescence—loneliness, longing, and unexpected beauty—against the backdrop of real-life tragedies that shook Korean society.
House of Hummingbird has received worldwide acclaim for its tender, luminous portrayal of girlhood, winning the Grand Prix at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival’s Generation 14plus section and the NETPAC Award at the Busan International Film Festival. Kim’s debut film showcases the depth and richness of Korean independent cinema, earning international acclaim and establishing her as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Korean filmmaking.
