The Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) is pleased to present a two-part hands-on workshop series exploring the beauty of Hangeul through both modern and traditional calligraphic practices. Led by artist Shiyool, this program offers participants a unique opportunity to experience Hangeul not only as a writing system, but as a refined visual art form.
Rooted in centuries-old traditions, Hangeul Seoye (traditional Korean calligraphy) emphasizes discipline, balance, and the aesthetic spirit of brushwork, while modern Hangeul calligraphy focuses on expressive design and personal interpretation. Through this two-session series, participants will explore both approaches and create their own meaningful works.
Participants will begin with an introduction to fundamental brush techniques, including stroke practice, character formation, and composition. Guided by the instructor, each participant will then create a personalized Hangeul design by selecting a word or short phrase.
The workshop culminates in the creation of a Korean traditional hand fan, where participants will transfer their lettering onto the fan and complete their work with finishing touches such as calligraphic refinement and stamping.
This immersive experience invites participants to engage with Hangeul not only as a writing system, but as a form of artistic expression that bridges tradition and contemporary design.

◆ ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Shiyool (시율), is a Hangeul calligrapher whose name combines the characters for “to see” and “brush”, reflecting a practice of observing the world through the tip of a brush and translating its essence into visual language. Rooted in traditional Hangeul calligraphy, her work expands into contemporary calligraphy and character abstraction, exploring Hangeul as an independent form of visual art beyond its function as written language. Using traditional materials such as brush, ink, and hanji (Korean handmade paper), she integrates a modern sensibility to express the rhythm, flow, and spatial beauty inherent in each character.
Based across Korea, Japan, and New York, Shiyool’s artistic practice is shaped by her cross-cultural experiences, which have led her to explore themes of boundary and communication. She holds a Ph.D. from Waseda University and currently serves as the Director of the Hangeul Calligraphy Association in Japan. Through exhibitions, publications, and international recognition, her work reinterprets the spirit of East Asian calligraphy within a contemporary global context, aiming to share the universal aesthetic resonance of Hangeul with diverse audiences.
