This program includes for your enjoyment:

“Sogo Chum” (Hand-Held Drum Dance) with Kaitlyn Yhun, John Kim, Eunice Kim, Justin Kang, Isaac Chung, Simon Cho, Hannah Chang and Susan Cho
This traditional dance uses a small hand-held drum called a “sogo.”

“Janggo Chum” (Hourglass-Shaped Drum Dance) with Clara Shin
The “janggo,” double-sided and shaped like an hourglass, is the drum most widely used in traditional music.

“Samulnori” (Percussion Ensemble) with Yusun Kang, Yeani Kim, Katherine Oh and Michelle Lee
The words “sa” and “mul” mean four objects, and “nori” means to play. “Samulnori” refers to four musicians playing and dancing with four percussion instruments: “kwaenggwari” (small gong), “janggo” (hourglass-shaped drum), “jing” (large gong) and “buk” (barrel drum).

The Korean Traditional Music and Dance Institute, founded in 1987, is the oldest established Korean performing arts organization in New York City. It specializes in teaching and performance, striving to preserve Korea’s rich and vibrant culture and share it with Korean-Americans and the surrounding community.
