Korean Cultural Service New York (2014-2015 Open Stage) Guidelines (Closed)

The Korean Cultural Service New York presents an opportunity for talented performers/performing arts organizations to present their works in New York City through the <2014-2015 Open Stage> public contest. Selected performers/performing arts organizations will receive the chance to co-host the event and to be featured in one performing arts series at the Gallery Korea of the Korean Cultural Service New York or at the Theatre of the Flushing Town Hall in the 2014-2015 season. Deadline for submission is 5PM, June 27 (Friday), 2014, EDT. Please review the guidelines carefully before completing the application form. 

I. Overview

  1. Title : 2014-2015 Open Stage
  2. Purpose : To support the revitalization for creating arts through offering performance opportunities to talented performers/performing arts organizations
  3. Performance Venues : Applicants can choose either A and/or B
    A) Korean Cultural Service NY (460 Park Avenue, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10022)
    B) Flushing Town Hall (137-35 Northern Blvd., Flushing, NY 11354)
  4. Performance Schedule
    A) Korean Cultural Service NY
    • Exact performance dates (between January 2015 – June 2015) will be decided after discussion with selected performers/performing arts organizations.
    • All performances start at 7 PM.
    B) Flushing Town Hall
    • October 10 (Friday), 2014 at 8 PM or
    • November 7 (Friday), 2014 at 8 PM


II. Application Genre Categories

  1. Music : Korean Traditional Music, Classical Music, Jazz, etc.
  2. Dance : Korean Traditional Dance, Contemporary/Modern Dance, Ballet, etc.
  3. Theater : Plays, Musical Theater, etc.
  4. Multidisciplinary : Mime, Nonverbal Performance, Korean Traditional Folk Theater, etc.


III. Application Requirements & Regulations

  1. All performances are FREE and open to the general public.
  2. One performance per performer/performing arts organization
  3. The length of the entire performance must not exceed two hours (including intermission).
  4. If applicable, Applicants must acquire the legal rights to perform the script/musical piece or receive any necessary permission for the performance.
  5. For continued support in providing performance opportunities to performers/performing arts organizations through the Open Stage program, Korean Cultural Service New York has the following eligibility regulations:
    • Applicants who intend to fundraise with a benefit concert through 2014-2015 Open Stage are NOT eligible.
    • Applicants who are NOT selected as a recipient in 2014-2015 are eligible to re-apply for Open Stage the following year.
    • Applicants who are selected as a recipient in 2014-2015 are NOT eligible to re-apply for Open Stage for the following two years.
    • Applicants who are selected as a recipient in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons are NOT eligible to re-apply for Open Stage 2014-2015.


IV. Selection Process and Methods

  1. A judge panel formed of specialists in the performing arts industries will review all application materials and evaluate applicants based on the selection criteria.
  2. The panel holds the right to make the final decision of the performance venue for each selected performer/performing arts organizations based on the selected criteria.


V. Benefits for Selected Recipients

  1. A stage will be provided for the performance: either at the Gallery Korea of the Korean Cultural Service NY or the Theatre at the Flushing Town Hall
  2. Technical support: Please refer to the Appendix
  3. Support for advertising and PR for the performance including multiple PR components
  4. A section in the 2014-2015 Open Stage Program Book
  5. The Korean Cultural Service New York will provide a small artist fee to the selected performers/performing arts organizations after completion of the performance
  6. Rehearsal space
    A) Korean Cultural Service NY• Before the performance date, one rehearsal opportunity is available from 6-9 pm
    • On the performance day, rehearsal space is available from 6-7 PM.
    B) Flushing Town Hall
    • On the performance day, rehearsal space will be available from 9 am until 30 minutes before the performance
  7. Reception will be provided before the performance starts.
    • Korean Cultural Service New York will serve refreshments before each performance

     

    *Korean Cultural Service New York and Flushing Town Hall will not sponsor U.S. Visas for the performers or funds for the expense of hotels, meals, transportation, and studio rentals for extra rehearsals.


VI. Application Schedule and Required Documents

  1. Application Deadline: 5 PM, June 27 (Friday), 2014, EDT.
  2. Announcement of Results : In July 2014, the Korean Cultural Service New York will notify recipients individually via telephone and/or email
  3. Documents and Materials for Submission: The application must be filled out in the prescribed format. Please download the form from the Korean Cultural Service New York’s website.
    • Required: Completed application form
    • Required: Work Samples (Video, Audio, Photos, Scripts, etc)
      (If this performance is a premiere, you must submit work samples of your past production/performances.)
    • Optional : Other materials if applicable

VII. Additional Information 

  1. Performance space and dates are subject to change depending on the final results of the public contest.
  2. The Korean Cultural Service New York will retain all submitted documents and materials that are received. KCSNY is unable to return submitted work samples.
