Synopsis: Rei, a middle school girl living in Tokyo, begins her winter break. Around the same time, Gyuri, a Korean high school student, arrives in the city to visit her father, who is working there. With both of their parents busy and absent, the two girls are left to drift through their own quiet, aimless days.
Director’s Note: Rei’s Winter Break is the third feature I have made together with cinematographer LEE Seung-eun, my longtime collaborator since our shared debut with Wild Flowers (2014). Over the past decade we have continued to make films, often working apart, sharing brief moments of joy between long stretches of difficulty. Along the way we lost some of our courage; what remained were our friends. With a camera, a zoom lens, a borrowed tripod, a tape recorder, and the actress JUNG Joo-eun, we set out for Japan to make a film with these friends — a journey full of the warm, drowsy hours of an unplanned trip. Standing by the winter sea on our last day of shooting, we found our courage again. That was our final winter break.

◆ PARK SUK-YOUNG is a South Korean filmmaker known for a body of work that returns repeatedly to characters living on the margins of society. He made his feature debut with Wild Flowers (2014), the first installment of his “Flower Trilogy,” which continued with Steel Flower (2015) and Ash Flower (2016). His following features include The Hill of Wind (2017), Off Day (2019), Your Mountain (2020), and Shine (2023). Rei’s Winter Break (2025) is his latest feature.
