Experience a profound expression of Korea’s Buddhist cultural heritage through Kyungtz'e Eosan Sooryukje, a ritual tradition designated as Seoul Metropolitan Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 43.
Through the resonant sounds of beompae Buddhist chants, ritual music, ceremonial movement, and dance, the performance introduces the spirit of Sooryukjae—a Korean Buddhist rite dedicated to comforting departed souls and guiding them toward peace and liberation.
Presented in the week of Veterans Day, Kyungtz'e Eosan Sooryukje invites audiences to remember those who have lost their lives through war, conflict, and terrorism, as well as those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others, while reflecting on our own lives and contemplating compassion, peace, and repose.
Rooted in centuries of Korean Buddhist tradition yet resonant with today’s growing interest in mindfulness and contemplation, the performance offers not only a rare encounter with Korea’s living spiritual heritage, but also a quiet space for remembrance, reflection, and inner peace.
