2021 VDDF GALA Opening heralds the most anticipated four-day festival of contemporary dance in the greater New York City region. The GALA will feature several very highly-regarded troupes: Jennifer Muller|The Works, Obremski/Works, three of the most eclectic companies from South Korea: DAEGU CITY DANCE COMPANY, collective A|Jinyeob Cha & Theatre Mucheon|Ara Kim, and host WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company. 


WHITE WAVE scours the globe in search of today's most innovative dancemakers, both emerging and established, and brings them VIRTUALLY together for one extended weekend, all the while paying extra attention to the new, emerging, and experimental. Dance lovers will experience a veritable cornucopia of the best of contemporary dance. 

2021 VDDF attracts the very best by providing artists access to our global audiences to experience, first-hand, the incomparable vitality of the NY & around-the-world Dance scene. 2021 VDDF features 60 contemporary dance troupes combining over 350 artists who will present solo, chamber, and full-scale works. Dancers from across the United States, and internationally, from Mexico, Hungary, China, and Korea will join the New York’s active dance community to offer the full range of new directions in Dance in the 21st century. 

This year, to celebrate WHITE WAVE Dance's 20th Anniversary of the DUMBO Dance Festival, WHITE WAVE invited nine leading Dance companies from Korea to represent the country's contribution to world Dance. MetaDance, a stand-out among emergingDance groups in Korea is a company that has won awards at festivals world-wide. Three choreographers, Choi Seong-ok ('Pilgrimage’), Kwak Yong-geun ('Off Station') and Hong Jeong-a (‘Trunk'), will present their unique vision of Dance during the Pandemic year.

'Body-go-round: round 10' is the work of collective A / Jin-yeop Cha, who supervised the choreography of the opening and closing performances of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. “When we didn't know each other,” by the expressionist director of Theatre Mucheon / Kim Ara, who is known as the pioneer of the Korean theater industry. 'The Car', a large-scale work by the DAEGU CITYDANCE COMPANY/ Sung Yong Kim, is the collaboration with well-known French art director, David Gauchard, and video artist David Moreau. This work explores the unique sympathy between a Dancer and a car, has all the energy of a masterpiece. “Black Salpuri,” of the Seop Dance Company / Yongchul Kim, beautifully melds traditional Korean dance, as it finds its way into the modern and post-modern world. Renowned for her “free and pure” style, Won Kim’s “Being Involved 2015 – a mere coincidence” speaks to her ideas on experimental performance. As a passionate dancer, choreographer, and professor, Lee Tae-sang's “Hybrid Blues,” exhibits their remarkable capability, technique, and skills. This program is a rare opportunity to see why the international Dance world, like Hollywood, has its eye on the Korean scene for new directions in art.
