“A play that embodies the overlap of popular interest and delicate artistry,
is a tragic comedy that will bring you both laughs and tears.”

Notes on the Program
Hong-do is a courtesan’s tragic love story in the form of popular drama. Playfactory Mabangzen has adapted and revived Sun-gyu Lim's one of the most famous shinpa (a genre of popular drama), ‘Deceived by Love, Despaired by Money (1936)’ in 2014.

In today’s world, the concept of ‘purity’ is lost. Self interest and instant pleasure prevail all around. In contrast, Hong-do foolishly keeps her loyalty and pureness to the end. As an everlasting classic, this sends a message to our modern society. Hong-do reminds us not only the virtues we have forgotten, but the true value of love.

Playfactory Mabangzen
In 2005, Playfactory Mabangzen was founded by writer and director Sun-Woong Koh. As a fan of magical realism, Koh is interested in depicting the strange realities and characters of the world. His aim is to find that which lies at the core of the piece, the essentiality, and recreate it. Trademarks of the company’s performance include the actor’s constant and unrelenting stage movements and unusual rapid fire speech. The aesthetics of theatrical form and methods of communication is what the company especially focuses on.

<Hong-do> is presented by Korean Cultural Center NY in partnership with Flushing Town Hall.
