ChungMuRo Express: Classic Korean Cinema presents Housemaid (Ha-nyeo)

KIM Ki-Young's "Golden Age" masterpiece has been included in Jean-Michel Frodon's 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. It is also the oldest extant Ahn Sung-Ki film where he performs with poignancy as a child in a traditional family living in a new home. The husband Dong-Sik teaches music to women factory workers, while his wife works at home at the sewing machine to help with family bills. Dong-Sik finds a housemaid when she breaks down from overwork. However, the maid acts in strange ways, such as spying on Dong-Sik. An incident occurs which motivates the housemaid to find revenge, and the Confucian order of the household comes crashing down. This film is in Korean with English subtitles.

Film Curator Ms. Hyun-Ock Im will introduce the program and lead a discussion after the screening
