About the Book
Seonbi Country Korea: Seeking Sagehood (Author: Hyungwon Kang)
Seonbi refers to the learned class of the Joseon Dynasty, who not only possessed Confucian knowledge but also pursued the perfection of character. They cultivated scholarship and virtue, and were willing to risk their lives for justice and greater causes. The Seonbi Spirit formed the foundation of Joseon thought and remains one of Korea’s most valuable intellectual and cultural legacies.
Through this book, the author introduces the world to Korea’s representative philosophy and heritage—the spirit and culture of the Seonbi—from diverse perspectives. It highlights timeless values such as honor, discipline, courage, empathy, inclusion, and wisdom, offering insights that continue to inspire leaders and individuals today.
