The Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) is delighted to present “A Sweet Bite of Tradition: Korean Desserts for Chuseok,” co-presented with Rice Blossoms.

Chuseok, Korea’s harvest festival, is a time of gratitude, family gatherings, and sharing food. This hands-on workshop series invites participants to experience the artistry of traditional Korean desserts—Dashik (black sesame tea cookie), Songpyeon (half-moon rice cake), and Danja (filled rice cake)—reinterpreted with a modern sensibility.

Led by Jennifer Lee Ban (Mama Ban), founder of Rice Blossoms, The workshops will lead participants in making doughs, fillings, and intricate designs from scratch using natural, gluten-free ingredients. Attendees will have the chance to shape and steam their own creations, then enjoy them alongside traditional tea.

Across four sessions, you’ll experience the making of three unique Korean desserts:

  • Dashik (black sesame tea cookie): Once a treat for royalty, these delicate pressed cookies are now enjoyed with tea and symbolize elegance and refinement.

  • Songpyeon (half-moon rice cake): the iconic Chuseok rice cake, filled with sweet ingredients like sesame seeds, honey, and brown sugar, then steamed to fragrant perfection.

  • Danja (filled rice cake): festive bite-sized rice cakes with seasonal and modern fillings such as apple & date, yuja & matcha, and various nuts & coconut.

During these workshops, you will:

  • Learn to prepare doughs, fillings, and designs from scratch using natural ingredients.

  • Shape, (or press), and steam your own beautifully crafted Korean desserts.

  • Savor your creations paired with traditional tea

  • Take home your handmade desserts to share with family and friends.

No prior experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and an apron!

🔳 ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Jennifer Ban, Founder of Rice Blossoms

After becoming a new mom, Jennifer Lee Ban, aka Mama Ban, found it challenging to source healthy snacks for her daughters. At the same time, she was seeking a creative outlet after stepping away from her career as a professional interior designer. During her search for inspiration, she discovered the art of crafting Korean desserts—treats that were not only healthy and delicious but also beautifully creative. This discovery led to the founding of Rice Blossoms, a brand dedicated to reimagining traditional Korean desserts with a modern twist, all steamed with love.

A longtime health enthusiast, Mama Ban was happy to find that traditional Korean rice cakes weren’t just flavorful—they were naturally gluten-free and often vegan, too.
