The Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) is excited to announce a special event entitled "Handcraft K-Dessert: Songpyeon" co-presented with Rice Blossoms, and special support by Daytrip NYC.

K-Dessert refers to Korean traditional desserts that have been reinterpreted in a modern way or fused with Western-style desserts to create entirely new forms. More than just food, K-Desserts are creative treats that embody Korean culture and sensibilities, and they are gaining popularity both domestically and internationally.

At this special event, join us for a hands-on Korean dessert workshop where you'll learn to make Songpyeon, a traditional rice cake enjoyed during Korea’s Harvest Festival, Chuseok.

Songpyeon is a beautifully shaped rice cake filled with sweet ingredients like sesame seeds, red beans, or chestnut paste, and is steamed over pine needles for a fresh aroma. More than just a treat, Songpyeon represents gratitude for the harvest, wishes for prosperity, and the warmth of family gatherings.

During this workshop, you will:

  • Discover the story and symbolism behind K-Desserts and Songpyeon

  • Learn to shape and fill your own rice cakes from scratch (various shapes) using simple, gluten-free ingredients like rice flour, honey, sesame seeds and brown sugar

  • Savor the elegant flavor of Hadong green tea, crafted through a 1,200-year-old traditional method, paired with your own handmade Songpyeon

Don’t miss this delicious opportunity to learn hands-on experience of a beautifully shaped rice cake and bring home your own handmade Songpyeon. No prior experience necessary. All are welcome!

🔳 ABOUT THE DEMONSTRATOR

Jennifer Ban, Founder of Rice Blossoms

After becoming a new mom, Jennifer Lee Ban, aka Mama Ban, struggled to find healthy snacks for her daughters. At the same time, she was itching for a creative outlet after leaving her professional interior designer job. In her search for inspiration, she stumbled upon the art of crafting Korean desserts which were healthy, creative, and tasty. Since then, Rice Blossoms was founded with a mission to create and spread modernized Korean desserts that are steamed with love.

Mama Ban has always been health-conscious and was happy to find that traditional Korean rice cakes were not only delicious, but also, gluten-free and (mostly) vegan as well!
