2018 OPEN STAGE: SAMULNORI

Korean Cultural Center New York is proud to present 2018 Open Stage: Samulnori, celebrating the creation of one of the most popular Korean music genres performed on stage.

Since samulnori was established in 1978, it has sparked a renaissance in Korea’s music scene and gained worldwide acclaim. 2018 marks samulnori’s 40th anniversary as a new genre of performance art. 

Samulnori is based on the core principle of harmony among man, heaven, and the earth. With each of the four key instruments representing an element of nature, their distinct sounds combine to create vibrant, unified music. 

KCCNY is excited to introduce the depth and breadth of the beauty of samulnori to the US this year.

Come join us at our very first typography exhibition, “Found in Translation” (다른듯 같은뜻), in celebration of International Literacy Day. In a collaboration with @snc_newyork, this year’s show is a collaborative effort between 19 Korean artists and 19 English speaking artists who’ve created artworks based on colloquial expressions and sayings in their respective language. Juxtaposed in pairs, the artworks seek to explore the differences and similarities between the two cultures through the lens of colloquialism. Details below.
