Bandoneon : Juan Pablo Jofre
Saenghwang : Kim Hyo Young

“Saeng” is a composition inspired by the touching sound of the saenghwang (Korean wind instrument). Mr. Jofre originally wrote it for the Adagio movement of the Double Concerto for Violin and Bandoneon No. 2 commissioned by the Beleares Islands Symphony Orchestra, Metropolis Ensemble and San Antonio Chamber Music Institute.

Saenghwang : Kim Hyo young
Piano : Cho Yoon Seung
Bandoneon : Juan Pablo Jofre

Saenghwang is a musical instrument that produces a highly mysterious timbre and enables diversified expression, thereby harmonizing with the sentiments of 'tears' excellently.

In addition, the bandoneon played with it is a musical instrument played with a principle similar to that of Saenghwang that creates synergy in maximizing the sorrowful sentiment.

The cadenza is created at the discretion of the free-styling by the performer and may be deemed to be the key point.

“Sangju Arirang,” a folk song of Gyeongsang-do, is a variation created through an encounter between Arirang of Gangwon-do and Menarijo (a traditional musical tone in Korea) of Gyeongsang-do, and is expressing the adversities of the general public who are forced to leave their homelands, headed to overseas countries such as Manchuria, after having had their land defiled during the Japanese military occupation of Korea.

Saenghwang and piano are joined in impromptu performance for the theme of Sangju Arirang to express the sorrowful-yet-powerful spirit of the people at the time that can also be experienced through the lyrics.

Composed by Choi Myung Whun
Saenghwang : Kim Hyo Young
Organ : Shin Dong Il

The common features between Rococo and Sinawi, various attempts made without being bound by forms and also that the diverse improvisational elements being added depending on the artistry of the performer, provided me a great interest.

I imagine two period instruments from the East and the West that seem harmonious, but disparate at the same time.

"Ars Musica(in) Humana," I composed this piece with freedom the contrary sense of both human and inhuman sound which can be compared with the rivalry between David and Goliath.

Saenghwang : Kim Hyo Young
Cello : Noll Park
Viola : Erwan Richard

Beginning with Harmonics, the introduction allows one to feel the 'permeation' of various elements. In the subsequent Saenghwang solo, one feels lonely, and double-stopping seems to express a duality of ego.

The melody of the cello amplifies dissonance, while the clear echo if the arpeggios with the harmonics conjures up pure ideals.

Along with viola and cello, Saenghwang emphasizes heterogeneity, but eventually seeks harmony. A kind of pentatonics melody, which is almost unchanged, remains consistent in the face of heterogeneity, diversity, and discord. - Kim In-Kyum (Music Columnist)
