Join us for a Korean Storytime featuring the award-winning picture book 호랭떡집 (Rice Cake House of a Tiger) by Seo Hyun, winner of the 2024 Bologna Ragazzi Award – Comics: Early Readers, Special Mention. This fun and quirky tale follows a rice cake-loving tiger who opens his own shop—until goblins get involved and chaos ensues!
About the Book
Long ago, a tiger who loved rice cakes finally opened his own rice cake shop. One day, he receives a mysterious order—to deliver a birthday rice cake to the King of the Underworld! After staying up all night to prepare the cake, the tiger ventures into the underworld, where he encounters a parade of quirky and spooky monsters. Each one begs, “Give me a piece of rice cake, and I won’t haunt you!” Will the tiger make it back home safely with the cake for the king?
Full of twists, mischief, and charm, this imaginative tale is a delightful adventure for young readers.
Activity: Make Your Own 소떡소떡 (sotteok-sotteok)
Kids will get to make two delicious skewers of 소떡소떡 (sotteok-sotteok), a beloved Korean street snack. Made by alternating chewy rice cakes and mini sausages on skewers, then coated with a sweet-and-spicy sauce, this snack is a hit with both children and adults. This hands-on activity highlights the fun and flavors of Korean food culture. Kids will love building (and eating) their own creations!
The food activity includes rice cakes, sausages, and a sauce made with red chili paste, ketchup, sugar syrup, and soy sauce. Please be advised if you or your child have any food allergies or sensitivities.
About Korean Storytime at KCCNY Library
Korean Storytime at the Korean Cultural Center New York Library invites children and families to experience Korean language and culture through storytelling and creative activities. Each session introduces an engaging picture book and a hands-on project designed to spark imagination and cultural curiosity.
About the Instructor
Heuiju Kim earned her B.A. in Korean Language and Literature from Yonsei University, and Certificate of the program for Education of Korean as a second language at Seoul National University's School of Education. Since 2008, she has been working as a teacher and program director at a weekend Korean School in Manhattan. She's been educating children and youth on Korean culture and language.
