Korean Cultural Center New York is pleased to present the 2021 Public Lecture Series with AHLFoundation. For the third program, we will explore Korea’s beautiful Lacquerware with mother-of-pearl inlay art with Eleanor Hyun,  Associate Curator for Korean Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. 

This lecture will learn about the long and rich tradition of Lacquerware with mother-of-pearl inlay in Korean art. And introduce the Metropolitan Museum of Art's upcoming exhibition <Shell and Resin: Korean Mother-of-Pearl and Lacquer>. The lecturer will also explore the Met’s  collection of Korean lacquerware with nearly 30 examples from the twelfth century to the present.

Speaker:Eleanor Soo-ah Hyun

Eleanor Hyun is the Associate Curator for Korean Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Previously, Curator Hyun served as curator for the Korean Collections at the British Museum from 2015 to 2019. She is a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Chicago, writing a dissertation on late imperial Joseon Korean and Qing Chinese art. She received a BA in Art History and MA in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia University.

In 2013–14, she was a Jane and Morgan Whitney Fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is the recipient of numerous other fellowships.
