The Traditional Korean Art of Knotting

Maedeup is the traditional Korean art form of knotting silken threads or cords. This unique craft has a 3,000-year history in Korea! Maedeup can transform any object by adding a unique flavor and beauty to it, and has historically played an intimate role in the lives of Koreans.

In class, you will learn the primary skills of Maedeup and will create various knots widely used in traditional works of art, such as the dragonfly wing knot, lotus bud knot and chrysanthemum knot. By exploring this art, you will have an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of lines; this awareness will open your eyes to new aesthetic discoveries. In addition, you will come to better understand the values Korean culture places on discovering the layers of meaning in Maedeup. You will find the spirit of Korea embedded in this delicate art form. Beginners are welcome!
