DEVICES
February 13 - March 14, 2003
Gallery Korea is pleased to announce the presentation
of Devices, an exhibition of contemporary sculpture,
from February 13 to March 14, 2003. The six artists,
in different ways, work with structural apparatus
that suggests or manifests functional devices.
Technology is central to the work of several
of these artists: Huang Shih Chieh uses plastic
tubing as a conduit for brilliantly colored water
in sculptures that combine organic and inorganic
materials in a spectacular display and Randy Polumbo
explores the potential for high-tech paraphernalia
to be recycled into elaborate fantasy machines.
Another artist working with electricity, Min Suk
Park, makes shadow animations within square boxes
affixed to the gallery wall.
In contrast, the basic technology of stitching
is used by Ulrike Heydenreich to make quilts with
topographical maps of oceans embroidered on their
surfaces. These are her “travelgoods”
and they are created as comfort devices for the
global worker who relocates from continent to
continent. Andrea Caruso is concerned with the
ways sophisticated technology is applied to developing
simple ideas. His round pill-like forms are in
fact copies of landmines but here, made out of
clay. Dong Won Shin also uses clay to replicate
objects, however, her interest is the acutely
angled forms of tools and kitchen utensils that
she reproduces in porcelain. The structures and
forms in this exhibition represent aesthetic devices
derived from a variety of technologies.
